About This Experience

Same operator and same coastline as the classic day tour, run on a different clock. Pickup is between 9:00 and 11:00 AM rather than at dawn, and the itinerary is built so that you reach the Twelve Apostles as the light goes long and warm instead of at flat midday.

The practical effect is not only photographic. By late afternoon the day-trip coaches that left Melbourne at 7 AM are already heading home, so the boardwalks at the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge are quieter than they were four hours earlier.

The inclusions match the classic tour — national park fees, morning tea, 16-language audio commentary, onboard Wi-Fi, a maximum of 24 guests — and so does the honest caveat: 13 hours is still a long day, just one that starts civilly and ends late.

The thing nobody can sell you is the sunset itself. This is the Southern Ocean; some evenings the sky performs and some evenings a front comes through and it does not. The tour runs either way.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.8/5 by 603 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

A MUST in Melbourne. It was a wonderful day. We made several stops on the way to the Twelve Apostles. A longer one at noon for lunch, then several short ones for different lookouts. There were breathtaking views along the Great Ocean Road, with many cute little towns. But the highlight was, of course, the Twelve Apostles. Unfortunately, it was cloudy, but you could see a little bit of the sun, and at sunset they looked even more beautiful than they already are. Thanks to our great guide Jono, who explained and showed us so much, and of course also for the safe round trip! It was a truly wonderful day!

Jai our driver and host was so lovely and welcoming; remembered everyone by name and told great stories as we enjoy our relaxing and beautiful day.

It was a great day on the road with Bluey! He was very friendly, shared lots of interesting information about Melbourne and Australia more broadly, and really took the time to engage with people on the tour individually. I went alone and Bluey offered to take photos of me. We also had a fun chat on the lunch stop. The drive was smooth, the stops were well thought out, time was well spent, and we were all kept very happy and comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time does the sunset tour get back to Melbourne?

Late — the whole point is to be at the Twelve Apostles at sunset, and Melbourne is about four hours' drive from there. The day runs roughly 13 hours from a 9:00–11:00 AM pickup. Do not book anything for that evening.

Is a sunset tour better than a morning one?

For photographs and for crowds, usually yes: the light is warmer and most day coaches have left. For daylight hours in the Otways, no — a dawn departure gives you more of them. If you only do one Great Ocean Road tour and you care about the pictures, take the sunset.

What if it is cloudy?

The tour runs anyway and you see the same coastline. Overcast evenings can be dramatic in their own right on this stretch of water, but nobody can promise you a colour-saturated sunset on the Southern Ocean.

Why does the pickup time change?

Because sunset does. Pickup is seasonal, between 9:00 and 11:00 AM, so the itinerary lands at the Twelve Apostles at the right hour in December and in June alike. Your exact time is emailed after booking.
