Great Ocean Road in December 2026: Weather, Crowds, Christmas and Tours

Planning the Great Ocean Road in December 2026? Early December against Christmas week, the weather, Twelve Apostles bookings, which tour to take and what to pack.

Updated November 2026

December is one of the best months for the Great Ocean Road if you want long days, coastal scenery and time for a full itinerary. But the first half of December 2026 and the Christmas-to-New-Year stretch are very different trips. In early December you can usually find a comfortable tour date; once Victorian schools finish on 18 December, the popular towns and lookouts get much busier.

There is one more change this summer: the Twelve Apostles now need a visitor arrival booking, even while it is free. If you join a guided tour, confirm before you travel that the operator handles the reservation.

This guide covers which week of December 2026 to choose, the weather, how to pick between a classic, reverse or sunset tour, and how to plan around the holidays without spending the whole day in the car.

December 2026 at a glance: summer weather, long evenings and a busy holiday finish. Melbourne’s December average is about 25°C by day and 14°C overnight, but the exposed coastal stops can feel much cooler. Victorian government schools finish on Friday 18 December and the summer holidays start on Monday 21 December. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December, with public holidays also on Saturday 26 and Monday 28 December. Twelve Apostles reservations are required but free until April 2027. Sources are listed at the end of this guide.

Is December a good month for the Great Ocean Road?

Yes, especially if you pick dates that suit the kind of trip you want.

December brings the southern-hemisphere summer: long daylight for sightseeing, green rainforest in the Otways and pleasant stretches of coast around Lorne and Apollo Bay. On a well-planned full-day tour you can fit in clifftop viewpoints, short walks, a lunch stop and the Twelve Apostles.

Late December is peak season, when families start their summer holidays and people travel over Christmas and New Year. You do not need to avoid the coast then, but book accommodation and transport earlier, leave more time between stops and be flexible about where you eat.

If your Melbourne dates are flexible, go in the first two weeks of December. You get summer conditions before the school-holiday rush. If you have to travel between 25 and 31 December, a guided trip can make the logistics easier, but check availability and holiday schedules for your exact date.

21–24 DecemberGovernment school holidays have started; more families on the roadBook transport and Twelve Apostles arrangements early

29–31 DecemberBusy summer travel and New Year holiday demandConsider reverse timing, an overnight stay or a small-group tour

These are planning patterns, not a live crowd forecast. Weather, events and road conditions change how busy a particular stop feels on the day.

Is early December quieter than Christmas week?

Usually, yes. The official Great Ocean Road tourism organisation names late December through January as the main summer holiday peak. Early December still brings Melbourne day-trippers and overseas visitors, but not the full school-holiday crowd.

If photographs, easier parking and an unhurried lunch matter most to you, aim for a weekday in early or mid-December; December dates do not all feel the same.

Great Ocean Road weather in December

It is summer in Victoria, but do not pack as if the whole road were a hot, sheltered beach resort. Melbourne’s weather is a poor guide to how the Twelve Apostles will feel a few hours later.

PlaceAverage December maximumAverage December minimumWhat it means for your visit
Melbourne (Olympic Park)About 25°CAbout 14°CWarm days, but the weather can change quickly
Cape Otway, near Apollo BayAbout 20°CAbout 12°CA mild coastal climate, with wind and showers possible
Twelve Apostles / Shipwreck CoastCheck the local forecastCheck the local forecastExposed clifftops can feel cold or very windy even when Melbourne is warm

These are long-term averages from Bureau of Meteorology climate statistics, not a forecast for December 2026. Melbourne figures are for the Olympic Park station, coastal figures for Cape Otway Lighthouse.

Does it rain on the Great Ocean Road in December?

It can. December is not a month of guaranteed sunshine. Melbourne averages about 50 mm of rain in December, with around six days of 1 mm or more, and Cape Otway gets a similar amount over about eight days. Cloud and showers can come in quickly along the coast.

Rain seldom removes the reason to go. Rough seas and heavy skies make the limestone cliffs look dramatic. The walks are less comfortable, so pack a light waterproof or windproof jacket even in summer.

If you have only one free day in Melbourne, do not cancel the trip because a long-range forecast shows a shower icon. Check the local weather warnings, the operator’s cancellation policy and whether any official site closures affect the itinerary.

Is it hot in December?

Some days are mild; others are very hot, particularly inland or during a heatwave. Expect strong sun at the clifftop lookouts, where there is little shade. Take water, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. The monthly average is not the hottest temperature you might meet.

When does the sun set in December?

December has some of the longest days of the year in Victoria. At the Twelve Apostles the sun sets after 8:30 pm throughout December 2026, from about 8:35 pm at the start of the month to about 8:55 pm at the end. That is good for photography and evening trips, but it also makes a sunset tour from Melbourne a very late day. Check the tour’s scheduled return time; you will not be home for an early dinner.

For visitor-centre opening hours, current booking instructions and the arrival rules for an evening tour, see the official Twelve Apostles plan-your-visit page.

The big change in December 2026: book the Twelve Apostles in advance

The Keerray Woorroong Visitor Centre opened on 16 October 2026 with an advance-booking system for the Twelve Apostles visitor precinct. The booking is free until April 2027, but free does not make it optional.

If you are driving yourself, make your visitor booking on the official Twelve Apostles website before you set off; it covers your parking at the visitor centre as well as your entry. Public bookings open up to one month ahead, so you may not be able to reserve a late-December date until late November.

If you are joining a guided tour, the tour company may book the arrival for you through its operator account. Ask the company to confirm this. Buying a tour ticket and holding a Twelve Apostles visitor-centre reservation are not automatically the same thing.

Do not count on turning up without a reservation in Christmas week. You may be able to register on the spot if places remain, but entry is not guaranteed.

Questions to ask when you book:

  1. Does my tour price include everything needed for the Twelve Apostles visit?
  2. Does the guide or operator make the arrival-time reservation?
  3. How much time will we have at the visitor centre and on the viewing platforms?
  4. If traffic delays us, who changes the reservation?
  5. Does the itinerary change on the Christmas holiday dates?

Best Great Ocean Road tours in December: which should you choose?

In December, the timing, route and group size of a tour matter more than any “best in summer” label. Each style below solves a different problem.

1. Classic day tour: the first visit

A standard Great Ocean Road day trip from Melbourne usually covers the Surf Coast, the Memorial Arch, Apollo Bay or a similar lunch stop, the Otways and the Twelve Apostles. Depending on the listing, you may also get a wildlife stop, a short rainforest walk and Loch Ard Gorge.

Many day tours last about 12–14 hours, sometimes longer in heavy traffic. In December you have plenty of daylight, but not unlimited time at each stop. Read the stop list instead of counting the attractions in the headline.

Choose it if: this is your first and perhaps only chance to see the Great Ocean Road, and you want the guide and the transport handled for you. Our pick: the Coastal Highlights, Forest and Wildlife tour, from $95.

2. Reverse tour: when timing matters most

A reverse Great Ocean Road itinerary usually drives inland to the Shipwreck Coast first, then follows the coast road on the way back. That can put your Twelve Apostles visit outside the main wave of westbound coaches.

It helps you avoid the crowds but does not promise quiet viewpoints. How many people are there still depends on independent visitors and the managed-arrival system, and some reverse tours make fewer rainforest stops than their competitors.

Choose it if: you most want to see the Twelve Apostles early and can accept the long inland drive first. Our pick: the reverse-route DeepTour, from $57.

3. Sunset tour: for evening light

A Great Ocean Road sunset tour usually leaves Melbourne later and reaches the Apostles in the evening. In December that can be lovely, but you will often get back to Melbourne very late.

Ask two extra questions this summer: does the operator have a visitor-centre arrival booking for the evening, and what is the confirmed return time? A sunset tour may not visit every stop an early-morning tour does.

Choose it if: the coastal light matters more to you than being back in Melbourne for dinner. Our pick: Bunyip’s sunset tour, from $100.

4. Two-day tour: for a slower itinerary

With one night away you can spend longer in Apollo Bay, the Otways or Port Campbell instead of treating every stop as a quick photo break. You also get more chances for dawn or dusk on the coast, subject to booking rules and weather.

Compare two-day Great Ocean Road tours carefully: some stay on the coast, while others spend part of the second day heading to the Grampians or Adelaide.

Choose it if: you have two days, want more than the main highlights and can book accommodation before the Christmas rush. Our pick: the 2-day Great Ocean Road tour, from $270.

What does a realistic December day trip from Melbourne look like?

Here is an example classic-route schedule, not a promise of particular stops or times on any one tour:

Approximate timeTypical part of the day
7:00–8:00 amPickup or meeting point in Melbourne; head for the Surf Coast
MorningTorquay and the Memorial Arch, coastal viewpoints, possibly a wildlife stop
Around middayLunch in Apollo Bay or a similar town
Early to mid-afternoonOtways rainforest stop or scenic drive, depending on the tour
AfternoonTwelve Apostles visitor precinct and, on some itineraries, Loch Ard Gorge
EveningLong drive back to Melbourne, often arriving around 7:30–9:00 pm or later

The order can differ, and a reverse tour changes it on purpose. Summer traffic, weather warnings, roadworks and the Twelve Apostles arrival booking can all move the schedule.

A common mistake is booking a theatre show, a restaurant table or a flight for the same evening. Keep the evening free, especially in the last two weeks of December.

Which Great Ocean Road stops are best in December?

Twelve Apostles: the essential stop

The Twelve Apostles are the main sight, but they are not a swimming beach. You see the limestone stacks from coastal viewing platforms; you come for the rock, the ocean and the long clifftop views.

Allow time for the visitor centre and the walk between the facilities and the lookouts. Older blog posts that describe a quick, unbooked car-park stop no longer match how the precinct works.

Loch Ard Gorge: beach access has reopened

If you are reading older guides, note this: the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority announced on 28 October 2026 that the beach access at Loch Ard Gorge would reopen that weekend, after safety repairs. Permanent exclusion fencing now keeps visitors away from unstable cliff areas. Follow the signs and do not cross the barriers.

The gorge also has clifftop views and a well-known shipwreck story. A day tour may stop here, but not every tour gives you enough time to walk down to the beach, and access can change with safety conditions. Read the land manager’s reopening notice before you plan a beach visit.

Gibson Steps: great views, but tides matter

The beach stairs at Gibson Steps reopened in February 2026 after safety assessments. When the steps are open and conditions are right, the walk down gives you a view of the stacks from beneath the cliffs. Southern Ocean swell can push water right up to the cliff line, though, and the beach is not safe or open in every condition.

Treat Gibson Steps as an optional extra on your tour. Check the official visitor advice and follow the signs on the day.

Lorne and Apollo Bay: summer breaks

These towns are places to slow down. In December a lunch break, a walk on the beach or a coffee makes the day feel more like a coastal holiday.

In Christmas week, though, restaurants and parking get busy and some businesses change their hours. If you are travelling independently, carry snacks and water instead of relying on a particular café being open when you arrive.

Otways rainforest: a change of scenery

Short rainforest walks are a contrast to the open coast and a break from the sun at the lookouts. Not every day tour includes a guided walk; some only drive through the Otways. Check the tour description.

Great Ocean Road at Christmas 2026: are tours running?

Do not assume every Great Ocean Road tour runs on Christmas Day. Some operators may run on Friday 25 December, while others close, change departure times, cut stops or charge holiday prices. The same goes for Boxing Day (Saturday 26 December) and the extra public holiday on Monday 28 December.

Open the live booking calendar for the specific tour and date, then check the operator’s written confirmation. A general claim that a tour runs “daily” does not cover public holidays.

For 25–31 December, check:

  • That the exact tour is scheduled on your date as well as in other weeks.
  • The departure point and pickup time; some hotel pickups have restrictions.
  • Whether the café or lunch stops change on public holidays.
  • Whether the operator has made the Twelve Apostles visitor booking.
  • The cancellation deadline and how the operator handles dangerous weather or road closures.
  • The likely return time, especially if you have plans that evening.

You can compare Great Ocean Road tours from Melbourne, or look at sunset departures and private tours. Availability and prices change by date, and nothing on this page means a seat is free on Christmas Day.

Should you book a tour or drive yourself in December?

Take a guided tour if you have only one day, do not want to drive on the left, want to avoid parking problems, or would rather someone else managed the long itinerary and the Twelve Apostles arrival.

Drive yourself if you want to choose your meal stops, take time over photographs, stay overnight or build your own itinerary. Driving does not get you out of the Twelve Apostles reservation, and the winding coast road needs your full attention.

A car is not always cheaper than a tour. For two people, car hire, fuel, insurance, parking and your time add up; for a family, the sums can come out differently. Our tour versus self-drive comparison sets out the trade-offs.

Is one day enough in December?

One day is enough for the main highlights, not for the whole region. December’s long daylight makes a day trip practical, but holiday traffic and many stops can still make it tiring. If you want to linger on a beach, walk in the Otways and photograph the coast in changing light, take two days.

What should you pack for the Great Ocean Road in December?

Do not pack for a city shopping day. You may move between sunny beaches, windy clifftops and shady rainforest in one afternoon.

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat: Australian UV is strong even on cloudy days.
  • A light windproof or waterproof layer: the coast can feel cool or wet when Melbourne is warm.
  • Comfortable closed-toe shoes: for lookouts, gravel paths and short forest walks.
  • A water bottle and some snacks: useful on long tours and on public holidays.
  • A phone charger or power bank: a 12–14 hour day of maps and photos drains batteries.
  • Any essential medication: keep it with you instead of in luggage stored on the vehicle.
  • Swimwear only if your itinerary includes a suitable swimming spot: the Twelve Apostles and Gibson Steps are not swimming stops.

For families, ask whether the tour accepts your children’s ages and provides a suitable child restraint where the law requires one. “Family-friendly” in a listing does not guarantee the right seats.

Staying safe on the Great Ocean Road in summer

December is part of Victoria’s fire season. Check VicEmergency before a long regional trip, including fire danger ratings and warnings. If an Extreme or Catastrophic rating is forecast, follow official advice and be ready to change or cancel the trip.

Check Transport Victoria for road information, and follow the tour operator’s instructions if conditions get worse. Never stop on the road to photograph a view: use the parking areas and stay behind the cliff barriers.

On beaches, watch the swell and the cliffs. A pretty beach below tall limestone cliffs is not automatically a safe place to swim or sit, because rock falls and big waves both happen without warning. For current access, trust official information over a photograph or an older blog post.

How far ahead should you book for December 2026?

No single deadline fits every tour and every date. Work through it in this order:

  1. Choose the week first. Early December and Christmas week are very different.
  2. Compare actual departure dates. Check the live calendar; an advertised “from” price says nothing about your date.
  3. Decide which tour style matters most. Classic, reverse, sunset, small-group and overnight tours are not interchangeable.
  4. Confirm who makes the Twelve Apostles reservation. This matters most if you book a tour through a reseller.
  5. Book accommodation early if you stay overnight. Apollo Bay and Port Campbell get busy in the school holidays.
  6. Leave room for delays. Do not make a Great Ocean Road day tour your last activity before an international flight.

If you drive yourself, remember the one-month public booking window at the Twelve Apostles. Booking a hotel earlier does not let you reserve the visitor precinct earlier than the official system allows.

Great Ocean Road in December: frequently asked questions

Is the Great Ocean Road crowded in December?

It can be, especially from late December into January. Weekdays in early December are usually much easier than Christmas week. The official regional tourism website describes the peak season.

Is December too hot for a Great Ocean Road tour?

Usually not. Average December temperatures along the coast are moderate, but heatwaves happen. Carry sun protection and plenty of water, and check the forecast for the places you will visit.

Can you visit the Twelve Apostles without booking in December 2026?

Do not count on it. The visitor precinct requires a reservation, which is free for now. Walk-up registration depends on spare capacity, so reserve ahead or confirm that your operator has booked for your group.

Are Great Ocean Road tours open on Christmas Day 2026?

Some operators may run, but it varies by company and tour. Check the calendar for Friday 25 December 2026, and confirm the pickup, meal stops and holiday cancellation policy.

Is Christmas Day quieter at the Twelve Apostles?

Do not assume so. Demand is high in Christmas week, and entry is now managed by reservation. How quiet your visit feels depends on the arrival slot, the conditions and the other visitors as much as the date.

Is it better to visit the Great Ocean Road in December or January?

For summer weather with less of the school-holiday crowd, early December is the better choice. January is warmer on average and sits fully in the main holiday season. Both months are good for sightseeing if you plan around the crowds and book ahead.

Can you swim at the Twelve Apostles?

No. The Twelve Apostles viewing area is for clifftop sightseeing only. Other beaches along the Great Ocean Road can be suitable when conditions allow; check local safety information and choose patrolled beaches. Never treat Gibson Steps or an exposed Shipwreck Coast beach as a swimming stop.

Should I take a sunset tour in December?

Take one if evening light is a priority and you can accept a late return to Melbourne. Confirm the operator’s Twelve Apostles arrival arrangement under the new booking system, the tour length and the return time.

Can I see koalas on a December tour?

Some tours stop at Kennett River or elsewhere in koala habitat. Sightings are possible, but wildlife is unpredictable, so read the itinerary and do not treat a sighting as guaranteed.

What is the best date in December 2026 to avoid crowds?

There is no guaranteed quiet day. A weekday in the first half of December is a better choice than the Christmas-to-New-Year stretch. If your dates are fixed, choose the tour route and arrival time carefully instead.

When to go in December 2026

If you can choose freely, go in the first two weeks of December. You get summer daylight and every kind of tour without the busiest school-holiday period. For a first-time visitor from Melbourne, a well-reviewed classic full-day tour is usually the simplest choice; a reverse tour helps if your time at the lookouts matters most, and an overnight trip suits you if you want to slow down.

If your trip falls between 21 and 31 December, go anyway, but book the actual tour date, confirm who holds the Twelve Apostles reservation, allow for holiday traffic and keep your evening free. The views are worth it in any weather, as long as conditions are safe. The same holiday crowds carry on into January, when the school break is at its height.
