It comes down to how many of you there are and how much the fixed schedule bothers you.

Private tours here are priced per group rather than per person — but every listing caps that group at a different number, and the cap matters more than the headline figure. On this site the same word “private” covers all of these:

Those are very different products wearing one label. The up-to-six listing at $681 works out at about $114 each for a full party — genuinely competitive with a small-group seat. The same money buys one person a car to themselves on the up-to-one listing.

So the comparison to run is not private-versus-group. It is your actual party size against each listing’s cap. Four people on the up-to-six tour pay about $170 each; four people cannot book an up-to-three tour at all without paying for a second vehicle.

What you are actually buying

The clock. A group tour’s schedule is fixed because forty people’s schedules have to be reconciled. A private tour’s is not. If the light goes extraordinary at Loch Ard Gorge you stay; if Kennett River is quiet and there are three koalas overhead you stay there instead. Nobody is counted back onto a bus.

The route. Private drivers will usually run the itinerary in reverse on request, add London Bridge and The Grotto, or skip a stop you do not care about in favour of one you do. On a group tour the route is the route.

Pickup where you are. Group tours collect from selected CBD hotels. If you are staying in St Kilda, Brighton, Fitzroy or out by the airport, a private car comes to you instead of you making your way into the city before 7 AM.

Not being on show. This matters more to some people than others, and it is the reason a lot of families with small children and travellers with limited mobility book private. You can stop when someone needs to.

What you give up

A guide talking to a full bus has usually done the route several hundred times and has the patter sanded smooth. A private driver may be excellent, and the ones on this site rate 4.3 to 5.0 — but the review counts are in single or low double figures, because a car carrying four people a day accrues ratings an order of magnitude slower than a coach carrying forty. That is a throughput fact, not a quality signal, and it does mean you are working from thinner evidence.

You also lose the incidental sociability, which some travellers count as a loss and others as the point.

What is not included

If your objection to a group tour is the size rather than the schedule, the small-group tours capped at 24 sit at a fifth of the price and solve most of it.
